DIT Staff Fee Waiver: If you are a current DIT staff member i.e. with current staff number, you may be eligible for a DIT Staff Fee Waiver. Please read the DIT Fee Waiver Policy and complete the associated Fee Waiver Application Form if applicable. This form must be completed before or at the time of applying.
Aim: This practice based module aims to provide a conceptual framework and practical strategies for staff interested in exploring new assessment and feedback methods within their teaching. Drawing upon relevant theory and module content, participants will develop skills to enable them to reflect upon their current assessment and feedback practice and to undertake a module assessment strategy redesign.
What will I learn?
Upon successful completion of this module, participants should be able to:
- Consider the role of assessment and feedback in programme design and the influence upon student learning within an institutional context.
- Discuss the nature of assessment and feedback in a HE environment from a number of different perspectives
- identify current challenges within the HE that might impact upon different assessment and feedback processes
- Critically review formative and summative assessment methods utilised within their own programmes
- With reference to appropriate literature, design, implement and evaluate an appropriate assessment and assessment strategy within a module/short course for a specific subject area.
How will I learn?
The module will combine a series of structured participative face to face sessions combining case studies, assessment and feedback exchange sessions, practice based activities and opportunities to discuss key issues with various key stakeholder groups. Participants will be asked to work with their module redesign project as they progress through the module.
|Week 1||Introduction to assessment and feedback within an institutional context: What are the challenges and what does the research say?|
|Week 2||Back to the basics of good curriculum design: what are the assessment possibilities and how might these be selected and designed to support student learning|
|Week 3||Different perspectives on assessment and feedback: thinking about students, potential employers and QA processes|
|Week 4||The importance of feedback in assessment: selecting, designing and managing effective feedback processes. The who, what and when of Feedback.|
|Week 5||Designing a module and programme assessment and feedback strategy that can work for me and my students|
How will I be assessed?
The module will be assessed in three parts:
Assignment 1: A Reflective Portfolio Entry on a “Formative Incident of Assessment Practice” This involves writing critically and reflectively about an assessment incident in the participant’s teaching experience (Guide 300 – 500 words)
Assignment 2: Individual case study. Using the DIT RAFT template, participants will prepare a short assessment and feedback case study based on a short interview with a colleague. (Guide 500 – 700 words)
Assignment 3 a choice of a 1,000-1500-word paper containing either:
- A critical evaluation of the assessment procedures of a module/programme they have recently been involved in teaching. The critical evaluation will be supported with reference to material covered in the module and current literature related to assessment and feedback
- A redesign for changes to the assessment and feedback of a module/programme providing a rationale for the proposals, with reference to the literature on formative assessment in higher education and to materials covered in the module.
Are there any pre-requisites? No specific pre-requisites but participants will be expected to have a module/ short course with which to work with during the module.
