Programme Overview

The MA in Higher Education provides a flexible professional development opportunity for lecturers and educational practitioners in all disciplines to deepen knowledge and understanding in the field of higher education. Through a range of modules in Year 1 and a thesis in Year 2, the programme equips participants to carry out educational research using traditional and emerging research designs which are informed by a critical awareness of developments in higher education policy and practice. 


Programme Structure & Approach

The MA programme takes a minimum of two academic years to complete and requires participants to complete modules leading to 60 ECTS in Year 1 and 30 ECTS in Year 2. The programme delivery is flexible to facilitate people working full or part-time and is delivered via a blended learning which comprises regular face-to-face instruction and different forms of interactive technologies. On completion of 60 ECTS from Year 1 modules, participants continue to Year 2 where they will complete a thesis (a further 30 ECTS) under the guidance of a supervisor.

Participation on this prgramme involves attendance for a half day a week. In Year 1 of the MA in Higher Education, classes take place on Tuesdays from 10am - 1pm. In Year 2, classes take place from 2pm - 5pm. See below for selection of modules on the MA programme.

MA Indicative Modules 


Programme Assessment & Award

In Year 1, all modules involve continuous assessment. This could involve small scale projects, mind maps, infographics, presentations and practice-based papers. Feedback and support are provided throughout to help participants develop academic writing and research skills. In Year 2, participants undertake a significant research study which develops theoretical and practical knowledge as well as a competence in the technical aspects of research. The completion of the thesis will be under the guidance of a supervisor who will typically be conversant with the research topic and/or design of the study. 

The requirement for award of MA is 90ECTS.

On completion of the programme, participants are awarded a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Higher Education
