The Grangegorman SDZ (Strategic Development Zone) which covers the Masterplan, was reviewed by An Bord Planeala at an oral hearing in November 2011.  The Bord is currently considering the SDZ and is expected to announce its decision within the next few weeks.

Construction on the replacement Mental Health Facility is progressing well, as can be seen from the photo below.  Once this is ready for occupation by HSE, they will move out of buildings they currently occupy on site, which leaves them free for GDA/DIT to proceed with our plans.

Surveys and Investigative Works:

Following the formal signing-over of a significant tranche of the Grangegorman site to the GDA, enabling works may now begin in earnest.  Many of the historic buildings on site will be incorporated into the new campus.  The first step is that a number of surveys and investigative works will be carried out over the coming weeks and months in the buildings listed below, in the following order:

Surveys on most of the remaining structures will follow once the above investigations have been completed. The illustration below shows the locations on site of these buildings:

Campus Planning Team - Meeting Summary Friday 20th April 2012:

DIT Access & Civic Engagement Service – Community Links

The service will relocate to Grangegorman on 18/19th May 2012.  Work has commenced on converting current space in the GDA/DIT building to office accommodation for the team.

The DIT Property & Facilities and Buildings Offices are working hard with Information Services and Campus Planning, to ensure the move is as seamless as possible, considering this is a very busy time of year for Community Links and continuity of service is vital.  Their phone numbers will remain the same, which should be helpful.  It is planned to re-use as much of their existing furniture as possible.

EHSI (Environmental Health Sciences Institute):

Work is also progressing on the brief for the new EHSI (Environmental Health Sciences Institute) building, a research building for which PRTLI V funding has been ring-fenced.

Short-listing in the tender process for an integrated design team is complete and appointment of a team is expected this month.

However a small number of local residents and residents representatives have appealed this plan to An Bord Pleanala. The oral hearing on the draft plan took place in November 2011.   A decision of the Bord is expected in March 2012.

Government confirms commitment to DIT Grangegorman Project

Following the government announcement at lunchtime today regarding expenditure on capital projects in the forthcoming budget, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT)  has welcomed the confirmation by Minister Howlin that Grangegorman remains a priority project for the government.

Professor Brian Norton, President of DIT,  said “There is no doubt that we are disappointed by the reduction in exchequer support in the short term.  However, we welcome Minister Howlin’s support for the project overall, and the fact that he has confirmed that PPP projects will continue to be supported.  A key element of the funding and delivery strategy for the Grangegorman Development is that it has been designed around a range of flexible building packages to match available funding.  Exchequer funding is one important element but other essential funding for the project arises from leveraging savings on the rent-roll for existing properties, sale of DIT-owned properties, PPP bundles and privately funded elements through philanthropy.”

The President and the Campus Planning team in DIT will be working closely with the Grangegorman Development Agency and with colleagues in  the Department of Education and Skills, the HEA and with the NDFA to tease out the  best way to re-engineer the sequencing of this vital development until capital budgets are reinstated.  The current Grangegorman strategy envisages  two major PPP packages on the campus and these would not require any major capital funding until 2016 and thereafter would be paid over a 25 - 30year timeframe.  Work will continue advancing these elements.

Professor Norton said he wanted to reaffirm DIT’s commitment to the project.  “The overall Grangegorman project is a very significant means to an end for DIT which is one of the largest institutions in the country, representing some 10% of all students in higher education in Ireland, but it will also be highly significant for the city as a whole.  It will be the first education and health campus to be developed in this country; it will serve the wider interests of the community in the north-west inner city; it will be a hub for enterprise and research; and it will be a significant urban development that is strongly supported by Dublin City Council and the business community.”   He said he was very pleased that the Grangegorman Development Agency is mandated to continue in its remit of delivering the campus development on behalf of DIT and HSE.  Commenting on transport measures confirmed in today’s announcement,  he said “We are also very pleased that the Luas link-up and extension to Broombridge will proceed as this will facilitate access for students to the campus from all directions.”

Launch of DIT developing Women through Sport and Physical Activity Programme

The Sport and Recreation Service officially launched the ‘DIT Developing Women through Sport and Physical Activity’ Programme on Tuesday 29th March 2011 at the Dublin Institute of Technology. The DIT Sport and Recreation Service in partnership with Dublin City Council established the ‘DIT Developing Women through Sport and Physical Activity’ programme after receiving part-funding from the DIT Foundation Office in 2010.  The programme aims to promote and encourage the involvement and higher integration of women in sport at all levels whether as a participant in sport and physical activity, a coach or official in sport, or developing women’s active leadership in student sports clubs or local community sports organisations. There are currently 6 DIT students and 8 members of the wider community participating in a wide range of workshops and modules designed to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to plan, organise and lead sport and physical activity sessions. The programme will conclude in the early summer 2011. Niamh O’Callaghan, Sport and Recreation Officer and Programme Co-ordinator said that the ‘Developing Women through Sport and Physical Activity’ programme is an important addition to the activities of the Sports Service, as it will create a culture of participation and combat negative peer influences enabling women to become positive role models within the Institute and its wider community.
