LEVEL 8 HONOURS DEGREE IN ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGY (DT175) BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology


PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION
The DT175 BSc (Honours) Architectural Technology programme is a new four-year full-time Level 8 honours degree programme which will commence in September 2010. It is one of a suite of new programmes which has been developed by the Dublin School of Architecture Department of Architectural Technology to address the educational needs of the professional Architectural Technologist. First Year Semester 1
In first year the student is introduced to the principles of building materials and technology and is encouraged to develop a capacity to identify and resolve architectural technology problems. Click here for further details.


First Year Semester 2
Technical Design Studio 2 is the principal Semester 2 module and provides the vehicle for application and integration of the technical knowledge, understanding and skills introduced in the other architectural technology modules to the development of the studio shelter project.  Click here for further details.


Second Year Semester 3
In Semester 3 the student is introduced to the building techniques required in the construction of a two storey dwelling using industry standard detailing and systems. Click here for further details.


Second Year Semester 4
In Semester 4 the student is introduced to the industry technologies employed in framed and clad structures of medium scale using concrete and steel. Click here for further details.


Third Year Semester 5
In Semester 5 the student is introduced to the industry technologies employed in framed and clad timber structures of medium scale and to the challenges of resolving complex three dimensional problems in site development. Click here for further details.


Third Year Semester 6
In Semester 6 the student is required to develop a full technical design proposal for a multi-cell building of fixed parameters, where possible selected from industry competition entries and with active input from the practice based design architects. Click here for further details.


Fourth Year Semester 7
In Semester 7, students are required to a carry out a group conservation study. This entails researching, measuring, surveying and recording an existing historic building with recommendations for making a modern intervention. Click here for further details.


Fourth Year Semester 8
In Semester 8, students are required to a carry out their final year thesis based on a collaborative research and design project with fourth year architecture students. Click here for further details.

PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION
It is expected that the DT175 BSc (Honours) Architectural Technology programme, as with the DT105 Level 7 programme which it replaces, will be professionally accredited by the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI). Click here for further details.


PROGRESSION
Graduates of the DT175 BSc (Honours) Architectural Technology programme will be eligible to progress to the recently validated Department of Architectural Technology Level 9 postgraduate certificate in Applied Architectural Technology, and to planned postgraduate diploma and masters degree programmes in architectural technology specialisms such as conservation technology, sustainable technology, and information management technology.
