DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGY COMPETENCES

The various Department of Architectural Technology programmes aim to develop knowledge skill and competence centred on 12 architectural technology professional competences. These competences fall into the four categories of ability: technical design (5), technical coordination and integration (5), management (1) and professionalism (1).

On successful completion of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) Architectural Technology programme the ‘’graduate’’ technologist will be able to:

  1. Develop technical design solutions to building problems, working in collaboration with the architect in the building design process, responding to and developing the architectural design through the application of building technology.
  2. Produce construction information to industry standards, including 2D and 3D technical and construction drawings and related specifications, written technical documentation and reports using computer aided design software applications and manual freehand drawing techniques.
  3. Apply an understanding of traditional and innovative building materials and building technology to technical solutions.
  4. Apply an understanding of building legislation, regulations, codes and standards to the building design process at conceptual and detailed design stages and throughout the construction process.
  5. Apply theoretical and scientific principles to the development of performance based technical solutions, using measurement and calculation, especially in the areas of thermal and environmental performance
  6. Engage in an informed way with the architect in the building design process, using knowledge of historical and contemporary developments in architecture and architectural technology, with an appreciation of the architectural design process.
  7. Engage in an informed way with engineering design consultants, using knowledge of engineering design and the role of structural, mechanical & electrical, engineering disciplines in the building design process.
  8. Engage in an informed way with cost control consultants, using knowledge of cost measurement, quantification and control, and the role of the quantity surveyor in the building design process.
    Engage in an informed way with domestic and nominated specialist design sub contractors at post tender and construction stages of the building design process, using knowledge of design and construction procurement processes and contracts
  9. Engage in an informed way with the building contractor in the building design and construction process, using knowledge of site practice and procedures and of building contracts.
  10. Use management processes and quality assurance systems to control technical information and design inputs in the building design and construction processes.
    Embark on a career as an architectural technologist based on an understanding of the need to uphold standards of professionalism, to recognise the limitations on ones knowledge and expertise and accept the extent of ones professional competence.
