FIRST YEAR (Stage 1)

Semester 1
In first year the student is introduced to the principles of building materials and technology and is encouraged to develop a capacity to identify and resolve architectural technology problems.

Technical Design Studio 1 is the principal Semester 1 module and provides the vehicle for application and integration of the technical knowledge, understanding and skills introduced in the other architectural technology modules to the development of studio projects in measurement, anthropometric study, material research and jointing.

Students are introduced to drawing skills such as freehand sketching, graphic presentation, hard line mechanical drawing and AutoCAD. Students are introduced to a variety of construction skills in the workshop environment of the Linenhall and partake in site and factory visits relevant to studio projects.

The theory and principles of architectural technology are introduced in range of theory modules delivered as lectures alongside and dovetailed with the general project work. Building Technology & Structures 1, Environment Services & Materials 1 and Professional Development 1 are delivered as lectures with related assignments, while Digital & Graphical Communications is studio based.

Students are exposed to their fellow first year architecture students through a number of small joint studio projects together with assignments in the shared modules of Building Technology & Structures 1 (structural investigation) and Environment, Services & Materials 1 (environmental analysis).
