FIRST YEAR (Stage 1)
Semester 2
Technical Design Studio 2 is the principal Semester 2 module and provides the vehicle for application and integration of the technical knowledge, understanding and skills introduced in the other architectural technology modules to the development of the studio shelter project. Students carry out technical research, site analysis, esquisse investigation and exploration. The project is described using technical orthographic drawings to industry conventions in CAD, schedules and models. The technical merits of the project are evaluated in a performance report and the project presented in a crit environment.

Students’ skills in drawing, freehand sketching, graphic presentation, hard line mechanical drawing and AutoCAD are further developed. Students’ exposure to construction skills in the environment of the Linenhall workshops continues, and they further partake in site and factory visits relevant to studio projects. All students are required to sit the FAS Safepass course to highlight personal responsibility for site safety and to facilitate access to sites.
Introduction to the theory and principles of architectural technology continues in the theory modules delivered as lectures alongside and dovetailed with the general project work. Building Technology & Structures 2, Environment Services & Materials 2 and History Theory Criticism 1 are delivered as lectures with related assignments, while Digital & Graphical Communications continues on a studio basis.
A number of the theory module assignments are integrated as elements of the studio project. Building Technology & Structures requires the application of principles of technology to the studio project and an investigation of the proposed structural system. Environment Services & Materials requires an environmental performance analysis together with a services proposal for the shelter and site. Digital & Graphical Communications requires preparation of a CAD drawing package using industry conventions together with development of a rendered 3D digital model.
Students are again exposed to their fellow first year architecture students through assignments in the shared modules of Environment, Services & Materials 1 (environmental analysis) and History Theory Criticism 1 (chair design).
