The Mediating Layers of Place

Project: Forest Research Facility for Coillte, Clashganny Lock, Co. Carlow

The thesis is focused on the functional and symbolic forms of ground and roof in order to mediate our perception of place. Creating a dialogue between these two elements can enhance our understanding and experiences of our surroundings and the structures within it.
The site is Clashganny Lock, located along the River Barrow between Borris and Graiguenamanagh, overlooked by the Blackstairs Mountain and Mount Leinster in Co. Carlow.
Focusing on forest growth in the area, the building is a forest research facility for Coillte, that aims to explore and promote new forestry systems in Ireland, particularly focusing on the study and growth of native broad-leaf species. Placed within the gentle sloped ground, north of the river, the building extends out across the valley in the form of a bridge to connect to the existing forest trail.
