Thingamajig: the Secret Life of Objects

January to May 2010

Tom Spalding, Lecturer in Product Design, is exhibiting a series of photographs of street furniture at the Glucksman Gallery at UCC. He writes: "this particular image is of a Mooring Post from Horgan's Quay which was made by Richard Perrott's Foundry on Hanover Street in about 1890. In previous times, hundreds of mooring posts like this lined most of the quays of the city providing berths for shipping. Now, only 29 are left, 14 by Perrotts, and they act as a reminder of Cork's vibrant maritime past ... I found that much of the street furniture in Cork was made in the city or county, and that in its way these objects were unique; reminders of people and organisations long gone. I had originally intended to write a report for the Heritage Council and Cork City Council, but became convinced that it would have an interest beyond the professional sphere as it is essentially "living" local history. To that end I published Cork City: A Field Guide to its Street Furniture in March 2009."

The exhibition was opened by Mary McAleese, President of Ireland on Friday 22 January 2010.
