Fergus Ryan

B.Sc., Ph.D.

Graduated with a B.Sc. in Pharmacology from UCD followed by a Ph.D. titled "The Glucocorticoid Receptor; Mechanisms of Transcriptional Regulation " based on the analysis of hormone and cell specific regulation of human gene expression.

This was followed by post-doctoral research with BioResearch Ireland based on the molecular analysis of bovine fertility and postdoctoral research in Harvard Medical School based on the analysis of the role of Thyroid hormone on the regulation of human gene expression.

Worked as a clinical scientist in the National Centre for Medical Genetics in Ireland on the molecular diagnosis of genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis, Friedreich ataxia, polyposis colon cancer and Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Lecturing in the School of Biological Sciences since 1995. Lecturing topics include medical genetics, recombinant DNA technology, control of eukaryotic gene expression and altered cell cycle control in inherited cancers.

Research and Academic Interests:

Research interests include the development of novel mutation detection technologies in human and animal genetic disorders, detection of pathogenic organisms using molecular techniques, analysis of HPV gene expression and the analysis of polymorphism effects on thrombosis and foetal development.
