Revision Tips

Revision means to see again, and involves practicing what the exam requires, which is not how much do you know, but- how well do you understand, which means not reading and hoping to remember, but active engagement with the material.

  1. Selecting what is relevant to the task.  Identifying the necessary topics and themes for each paper, with the help of past papers, friends (Revision Syndicates?) and faculty.

  2. Rethinking – ask new questions, see new perspectives, identify essential items, discuss and argue.  Rearranging – order and reorder, make cross references.  What about new material? Short term memory.  Reducing – re-write; make summaries, key words and phrases, etc. Notes, etc.

  3. Writing under controlled conditions:- Essay plans – brainstorm (reduced notes), select, order.  Timed essays, exam length, use friends and family for feedback!  Why - in order to discover potentials and limitations and to develop the particular skills needed on that day.
