Welcome to the DIT Student Health Centre website

The DIT health service provides a holistic approach to health, providing on campus health care to those students pursuing full time & apprenticeship courses.

Our service incorporates physical, psychological and social aspects of student health and health promotion.  Absolute confidentiality is maintained.  All records are maintained in the Health Centre and do not form part of student's college records.  Consent must be obtained from the student prior to disclosing records to any third party.

We hope you will find this website informative and interesting.  Please contact us if you have any suggestions for health matters which you would like to see explained here.

Consultations

Who is eligible to attend?

All full time students and apprentices with a valid student card are eligible to attend either Health Centre.

Please note that if you make an appointment and fail to give us 24 hours notice of cancellation a €10 will be applied to your account.

Consultation with a Doctor

Consultations are by appointment only.  We encourage students to make appointments as early as possible as our clinics tend to book up very quickly!

Urgent Appointments

If we cannot facilitate you with a Doctor's appointment, the nurse will endeavour to assess every student (through our triage system) and prioritise needs depending on urgency.

Please note:

  • If you are feeling unwell and there are no suitable Doctor's appointments, the nurse will assess & prioritise your needs.  If no immediate appointments are available with a nurse please inform receptionist that it is urgent.

  • Those students requiring Emergency Contraception should make an urgent appointment with the nurse, as this medication needs to be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex.  Evidence suggests that it is most effective if taken within 24 hours of unprotected sex.

  • Persons requiring repeat pill prescriptions should give at least 2 days notice

  • A medical cert will only be issued if the student has attended the student health centre, contacted the health centre at the time of illness or event, or if confirmatory evidence detailing the problem is presented to the student health centre from an appropriate source

Consultation with a Nurse

A consultation with a nurse can include the following;

  • Triage of students

  • Contraception advice; options, first pill assessment, emergency contraception assessment, problems with contraception.

  • Sexual health advice; triage of symptoms, information on sexually transmitted infections & screening/appointments.

  • Management of asthma

  • Smoking cessation advice

  • Routine injections

  • Removal of sutures

  • Wound Dressing

Part Time Students & PhD Students

Unfortunately Part Time Students and paid PHD students cannot be seen at the Student Health Centre.

Staff

May we bring to the attention of all staff that the Health Centres are for the use of students only.

  • Please do not ask the staff at the Medical Health Centre to see a member of staff as the DIT policy does not facilitate staff health care.

  • There is a specific policy regarding first aid for staff.  In an emergency situation your first point of contact should be the designated first aid officer for your faculty. You may attend your nearest hospital/accident & emergency or General Practitioner.

  • If your injury is of an occupational nature please report to your local occupational health officer.
