Male Examination

GREAT NEWS a new test is now available in Saint James Hospital to detect Gonorrhoea by a simple urine test. This eliminates the need for a swab from the tip of the penis or ‘UMBRELLA’ in most cases!!

The same urine sample can analyse for Chlamydia.

Please do not pass urine for at least 1 hour prior to your appointment time.

Blood samples will be taken for HIV, Hepatitis B and Syphilis.  You will need to retest if you had a risk (unprotected sexual intercourse) within 12 weeks.  HIV antibodies may take up to 12 weeks to be detectable in the blood.

You will be examined for the presence of Genital Warts and Herpes There are no accurate tests for these.  Note it can take over a year from exposure to developing a genital wart.  Genital warts are spread by skin to skin contact in the genital area.

Men who have sex with men will also have a very small cotton swab taken from the rectal area and from the throat.

Instruction will be given on self examination of testicles.
