Passive Samplers for Water Quality Monitoring of Persistent Organic Pollutants in the Marine Environment

The project aims to trial passive samplers as a tool for water quality monitoring for certain persistent organic pollutants in the marine environment. By deploying samplers over a defined time period this technology offers potential advantages over monitoring of water (spot samples) or biota/sediment, and could ultimately lead to better and more cost-effective compliance and trend monitoring.

The project will involve refinement and validation of methods for analysis of sampler membranes. The samplers will be deployed in the field samplers and will be analysed in parallel with contiguous mussel and water samples. Model compounds will be used to assess the performance of the sampler.
