The Department of Engineering Science & General Studies has circa thirty academic staff with expertise ranging across Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computing, Management, Sociology, Communications, Languages, General Studies and Physical Education. The department also has five technician staff as well as secretarial and class aid support. Our mission is to provide a quality education to all students on courses on which the Staff of the Department lecture, to facilitate the retention and progression of students and to contribute to the "whole person" development so as to prepare students for their future studies and their future careers.


At present the Department has responsibility for the Preliminary Engineering Course DT120 and the general first year Engineering Course FT125 and services numerous other courses both within and outside the Faculty of Engineering. The Department has Physics, Chemistry and Computing laboratories which provide the practical and hands on learning experience so important to support and complement the lecture programmes delivered by the staff. The department is located mainly on the fourth floor of the College at Bolton St.

Pat returned to head up the Department in September 2001 having spent 11 years acting as Liaison Officer between DIT and Industry.

He brings back a range of experience in sourcing funds from both EU and National Agencies for Research & Development and interaction with industry generally.Pat's background discipline is Physics; he obtained his PhD from UCD in 1976 and as well as his industrial liaison experience, he has spent many years lecturing and in academic administration.He has a particular interest in enterprise development and co-ordinates the AIB Bank sponsored Bolton Trust Student Enterprise Development competition across the DIT.
