Student Testimonial
Colin Campbell
Hi my name is Colin Campbell. I’m studying Mathematical sciences here in DIT Kevin St. I am currently in my 3rd year.
If you are interested in Mathematics I strongly recommend this course as it will provide you with a strong foundation in core subjects such as calculus, Statistics and Discrete Maths along with a wider knowledge on everything to do with mathematics.
The Classes are quite small which is great because not only do you get to know all your fellow students, it allows you to have a lot more time with your lecturers in case you are stuck in any particular problem.
The timetable is quite flexible and the work load is not to strenuous which allows you to enjoy the other elements of College lifestyle, be it through a club or society or any social aspect to the campus.
In 3rd year we are sent out on work placement which is great as it allow you to apply your skills in a professional working environment whilst also giving you an inclination towards what career path you may want to go down.
With such a broad education received, it makes us all highly employable and graduates can expect plenty of opportunities either in a working environment or in further education.
So study mathematical Sciences, you won’t regret it!
Eoin Barry
My Name is Eoin Barry. I am in 3rd Year of Mathematical Sciences in DIT. I chose this course because I always excelled in maths but wasn’t sure in 6th what career path to take and this course can lead to a broad range of careers including finance, teaching and IT. Some subjects covered include Statistics, Numerical Analysis & Computer Programming which caters for everyone’s interest.
Dit is a great college for both social and educational purposes. The classes sizes are usually small compared to universities. The advantage of this is that you get to know your lecturers personally and they become more approachable with any problems or queries you may have. DIT also offers a Student Maths Learning Centre you can attend for some extra help.
There are a lot of societies and clubs in dit for you to get involved in. they cater for every sport and interest you may have. Sports vary greatly from the usual Football, Gaa and Rugby to Ultimate Frisbee & Water Polo. I Joined Ultimate Frisbee in First Year of college and I have represented Ireland u20’s and captained the DIT team last year. This year I am coach of the club. The clubs and soc’s are a great way to get involved and meet new people. They all carry a great social side as well as competing against other colleges in Inter Varsity events.
I have enjoyed my experiences in DIT so far and would recommend both the college and the course to anyone interested in maths but unsure what careers are possible with a maths degree
Graduate Testimonial
My experience in DIT was a thoroughly enjoyable one. I started my course, the BSc in Mathematical Sciences, after having spent a few years studying Pharmaceutical Sciences. I had decided that working in a lab did not appeal to me and that I would much rather study my original interest, Maths. I had the option of studying Pure Maths in Trinity College but decided that the six months work experience offered as part of the DIT degree (at the end of 3rd year) would be far more beneficial to me when I went into the jobs market after finishing college.
My lecturers were all great and given the smaller class sizes I think we all got the individual attention that we needed if we got stuck on a particular topic or needed help. The lecturers were by far my favorite part of the course they were so accommodating and their notes were so helpful. The wide range of subjects available that are real world applicable, for example Statistics, Financial Maths and Differential & Integral equations, are ideal for what employers want to see on a C.V especially if you are looking for a job in the financial services or as a Statistician. Those topics helped me to secure a job as a Statistician for Wyeth Bio-tech (now Pfizer) during my work experience in college which was invaluable when I finished college and went into the jobs market.
I worked hard in college and reaped the rewards when I completed by degree. Despite the tough environment in 2010, I was extremely fortunate to have my pick of jobs in the financial sector. Now I currently work as a Financial Analyst for Danske bank and given the broad range of skills I developed in college, combined with working for Danske banking, I now have a choice of careers ahead of me.
