DT220: Industrial Mathematics

What is Industrial Mathematics?

Industrial mathematics is an interesting and relevant branch of mathematics that studies the analytical skills most desirable in the workplace. The programme has been carefully structured to offer the training, transferable skills and knowledge that employers in the commercial, financial, industrial and public sectors seek in graduates. A particular focus of the programme is the analysis and solution of real-world mathematical problems.

What will I study on this programme?

This programme is designed to equip graduates with the skills and knowledge required to apply mathematical modelling and an analytical approach to real-world problems in industry. It is a four-year, full-time honours degree programme and throughout there is an emphasis on laboratory-based work, problem-based learning and the development of professional skills (e.g. communication skills, effective team-work strategies and project management). The initial stages give a broad basis of subjects in applied and pure mathematics, statistics, and operational research. Latter stages consist of advanced modules in mathematical modelling, financial mathematics, operations research and mathematical statistics. The programme includes a six-month work placement during year 3 enabling students to experience a working environment and gain experience of using their analytical, problem solving and computer skills.

What are my career opportunities?

This programme has been specifically designed to address the need for highly-skilled, numerate, flexible graduates that are able to formulate and apply cutting-edge modelling and statistical analysis, and apply problem-solving techniques to real-world problems. Mathematics graduates typically find a wide range of interesting careers available to them, for example in financial services, industrial R & D, medical statistics, second-level teaching, software development, systems analysis, telecommunications, meteorology, civil service, environmental control & defence, economic & social research and a wide range of applied technologies.

Graduates of the programme will have acquired high-level analytical and problem-solving skills in a scientific and technological context and be in a strong position to embark on careers in industry, finance, commerce and business. In addition, they will be well equipped to embark upon higher degrees and degrees by research.

Are there study abroad opportunities?

While there are currently no modules available abroad it is possible to do your work placement overseas. The Erasmus exchange programme is also available as part of work placement.

What other options do I have after completion?

Graduates will have developed a capacity for independent study and be in a good position to progress to postgraduate study and research. In particular, Honours graduates from the programme will be able to undertake a taught MSc or study towards MPhil/PhD in the School of Mathematical Sciences or many other Schools across DIT.

I’ve always had an interest in Mathematics so Mathematical Science in DIT was a great choice of course for me.

The course itself is structured in such a way as to appeal to anyone with an interest in Mathematics and its applications.

Modules range from Foundational Maths in the first semester, which is great for someone entering college after having taken a year out like myself, or indeed mature students who might need to refresh their knowledge of the basics before moving on to more in depth material, to Computer Programming and Statistics.

In 3^rd and 4^th year there are optional modules to choose from, including Classical Mechanics and Financial Maths, and there is also a 6 month work placement in the 3^rd year.

Overall the course strikes the perfect balance between pure mathematics, more practical aspects, such as Financial Maths and Statistics, and Computer orientated modules such as Computer Programming.

Relatively small class sizes and the personal approach of the staff help to create an environment that is conducive to learning, and this enhances the educational experience.

I would highly recommend this course to anyone with an interest in Mathematics and its applications, as it is a great course whose purpose is to introduce the student to the world of Mathematics and guide them in developing significant knowledge of the subject.

Like many students finishing sixth year, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do after the Leaving Cert. Even though I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, I still wanted to go to college. It was difficult to find a course that suited me when I didn’t know what kind of job I wanted to get out of it, but I was lucky enough to find Mathematical Sciences in DIT. A degree in maths can open doors to many areas of employment and this allowed me to go into the course knowing that I would not be locked into any specific type of job on finishing college. The course allowed me to experience many different areas of maths so when it came time to pick options for third year I found it easy to choose because I had seen each area had practical uses and knew what areas of industry they would be suited to.

Like most people I was a little lost for the first few days but it didn’t take long to settle into the course. There were about 25 in the course and it didn’t take to long to get to know everyone. The lecturers went out of their way to make sure everyone felt at ease and we were even introduced to students in the other years of the course. By getting to know the students from the years above us we were able to get a better idea of what to expect. The lecturers were happy to interact with the class and would not just throw up notes on the board and leave. They were always on hand to help if I had difficulty with a topic.
