DT222: Physics Technology
Get a small taste of what life in DIT is like for students like you.
DT222: Physics Technology
Name Dr. Karen Kavanagh
Graduated: 1996
Current Position: Manager, Regulatory Product Development, Commission for Communications Regulation
Following my undergraduate degree I completed a doctorate in Applied Physics – Microspectrophotometry of Respiratory Pigments in the School of Physics at DIT. This project involved the design, construction and testing of a system using fibre probes to measure the oxidation-reduction reactions of respiratory pigments.
In my current role I manage a team of technical professionals with responsibility for introducing new telecoms frameworks to the Irish marketplace, ensuring that Irish consumers are provided with high quality, leading-edge telecommunications facilities and that effective competition is facilitated. I am also responsible for the effective management of all national telecommunications numbering and addressing resources, which includes traditional telephone numbering and new schemes e.g. SMS, MMS with a trend towards management of IP resources such VoIP and ENUM.
I would recommend this course because it offers students a broad scientific grounding in core modules with a key focus on developing practical scientific and analytical skills. Studying at DIT is a positive start to a career in industry - in addition to being a gateway to further academic study and research - as it equips students with a solid scientific background and technical expertise.
Name: Tara Kneafsey
Graduated: 1998
Current Position: Senior Manager, Ernst & Young, Information System Assurance and Advisory Services team
Following completion of my undergraduate degree I completed a two year M.Phil postgraduate qualification by research at the DIT School of Physics under Prof. Vincent Toal
Following this I took up a position in Andersen as a Technology Risk Consultant. The Andersen team merged with Ernst & Young Dublin in 2002. I currently assist large Financial Services clients in implementing large change programmes specifically in the IT and Regulatory areas.
I would recommend this course as a start to a career in professional services, as the analytical skills which I obtained on my undergraduate course together with the skills obtained on the M. Phil enabled me to secure my first job and have proven invaluable since.

She is currently teaching Physics, Science and Mathematics in St. Mogue’s College. She says, “There is great support for students in DIT Kevin St., particularly first years when everything is so new. There was great variety in my course and I really enjoyed it.”
