Governor of Hunan Province Visits TU Dublin

Professor David FitzPatrick, President of Technological University Dublin, welcomed the Governor of Hunan Province China to Grangegorman on 1st April 2019. Accompanied by the Chinese Ambassador to Ireland, Ambassador Yue Xiaoyong this was the first official Chinese delegation to visit Ireland's newest university.

Governor Xu launched a research collaboration for "Big Data and Scientific Innovations" between TU Dublin and the Hunan University of Commerce which was established with the assistance of the Chinese Embassy in Ireland. The Hunan Provincial Government subsequently made a multi-million euro investment in this research. Researchers from TU Dublin and Hunan are collaborating on exploit big data and artificial intelligence to support human decision making for environmental sustainability and health. 

Quoting an old Chinese proverb, in his welcome speech Professor FitzPatrick said "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the second best time is today. Global challenges require global solutions and the well-being of our planet is a shared challenge, and one humanity must work together to solve. Governor Xu planted a tree several years ago which is already bearing fruit today." 

TU Dublin, through one of its founding partners, DIT, was one of the first Irish universities to formally collaborate with a Chinese university, through a Computer Science collaboration with Harbin Institute of Technology which began in 2003. Governor Xu is a distinguished alumnus of Harbin having completed his Masters in Aerospace Engineering there.
