Department of Keyboard Studies

The Department of Keyboard Studies provides tuition in piano, piano accompaniment, organ, harpsichord and classical accordion from elementary to professional level. All part-time students attend a weekly instrumental lesson and musicianship class while wholetime (undergraduate and postgraduate) students receive more intensive tuition as part of their degree programmes.

It is the goal of the Keyboard Department to nurture talent by providing students with a stimulating and inspirational environment. The department has a long and proud history of producing fine pianists and organists (including John O’Conor, Micheal O’Rourke and Gerard Gillen) and is delighted to number many of its graduates among the teaching staff. Students are encouraged to participate in ensembles and chamber music at all levels. All students are expected to take annual examinations and are encouraged to perform at the annual Conservatory competitions, musical evenings, external competitions and recital series. The department is proud to have the internationally-renowned pianist, Dr Barry Douglas, as visiting lecturer.

Tuition takes place both at Chatham Row in the city centre and at Rathmines. The department is also engaged in outreach teaching projects with St. Patrick's Cathedral Choir School and Pianos Plus.
