Research Opportunities

Research in the Conservatory

In addition to the MMus programme, the Conservatory offers prospective students the opportunity to complete research degrees at MPhil and PhD level. The scholarship of performance is regarded as an integral part of all research carried out in the Conservatory and consequently, there is a particular commitment to practice-based research. In this research, various strands such as performance and musicology, theory and practice and interpretation and analysis are brought together. In all of these strands, the relationship with performance is critical. The act of performance itself is acknowledged as a valid form of research. Performers actively engage in each of these areas in order to achieve a holistic approach. Through practice-based research, the process of performance can be illuminated, articulated and analysed. Performance itself can offer new insights, analyses and criticisms of the musical score.
