Admission Free (limited seating)

Contemporary music ensemble Concorde present the final event in the very successful 2013 series Up Close with Music at the RHA Gallery, Ely Place on Sunday afternoon 28 April. The concerts offer listeners a chance to hear newly commissioned pieces from Irish composers alongside international repertoire and to meet with composers and performers during the interval.

  • Commissioned composer in the March programme is Deirdre McKay.  She says of the new trio for accordion, clarinet, and violin - ‘buttons, breath, bow’ – ‘The title intentionally cuts away any extra-musical reference to spotlight the sheer physicality of the instruments and the methods of their sound-making in all its abstract splendour.’   This work will be performed twice.
  • Concorde are delighted to introduce the music of the Up Close Student Composer Amy Rooney, a PhD candidate at Queens University.  Amy is exploring the ways in which a variety of art forms can be used as a stimulus for contemporary composition.  Her new work for violin and cello is an aural realisation of various seasonal scenes from a selection of Haiku, drawing on the many beautiful colours that these instruments have to offer.
  • Amy will also be represented by a piece for saxophone and stereo fixed media – Carlingford Lough – inspired by Marion Clarke’s poem of the same title.  For this performance Concorde will be joined by Up Close Student Performer Gavin Brennan, a student at the DIT Conservatory of Music & Drama.
  • Also receiving premieres are two works by young Irish composers.  Matthew Whiteside, who recently completed a Masters’ Degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, has composed a trio for Concorde – Paldookotous.  The title is a made-up name which somehow reflects the nature of the music!  Matthew’s influences come from a range of styles including the music of Daft Punk.  Eoin Mulvany from Co. Meath is a graduate of DIT Conservatory of Music & Drama and St. Patrick’s College, DCU. ‘On the Hollow Pallour’, is described as a meditation on the creeping unease of misdirected energy.
  • International works on the programme feature Italian composer Federico Favali whose solo cello piece was inspired by a poem about the transient March sun by Juan Ramon Jimenez. Finnish composer Tomi Räisänen’s duo, Gatekeepers, originally written for an ancient Chinese mouth organ – the sheng - with accordion, will be performed here for the first time on panpipes and accordion.  The outstanding young musician Iulian Pusca, a post-graduate student at DIT Conservatory of Music & Drama, joins Concorde again to perform this stunning work.

The programme is presented in two parts, at  2.30 pm and 3.45 pm, and listeners are invited to join for either or both performances.

The RHA Gallery opens at 2 pm and ‘Coppa at the RHA’, a cafe operated by Coppinger Row, is open from 2 – 5 pm.  Currently showing at the RHA (until April 28)  is Skin, An Artistic Atlas – a large-scale exhibition of work by Irish and international artists curated by Patrick T. Murphy that investigates some of the most dominant themes that skin evokes.
