Stephen Wallace

photo for staff pageStephen studied at the Royal Northern College of Music. He subsequently studied with Robert Dean, Anthony Rolfe-Johnson at the Britten Pears School, Snape Maltings and privately with Janice Chapman.

Opera appearances include Semele for the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, English National Opera, Innsbruck Early Music Festival and the Theatre des Champs-Elysees in Paris, Speranza Orfeo under Rene Jacobs for La Monnaie in Brussels, London, Dresden and Aix-en-Provence, Voice of Apollo Death in Venice for Opera Zuid, title role Radamisto for the Halle Handel Festival, Didymus Theodora with Emmanuelle Haim for Glyndebourne and also with Jane Glover for Opera National du Rhin, Strasbourg, Narciso Agrippina for Chicago Opera Theater and ENO, the world premiere of Birtwistle’s The Last Supper  with Daniel Barenboim at the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin and Glyndebourne, L’Umana Fragilita and Anfinomo Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria for Opera North and Buxton Festival, title role Orfeo ed Euridice for English Touring Opera, Ottone L’Incoronazione di Poppea  in Strasbourg and for the Royal Danish Opera, Copenhagen, Nerone L’Incoronazione di Poppea for Opera Theatre Company and Opernhaus Klagenfurt, Orfeo for the Boston Handel and Haydn Society, and Truth in Gerald Barry’s The Triumph of Beauty and Deceit for Los Angeles Philharmonic with Thomas Ades. Stephen subsequently sang the role of Pleasure in The Triumph of Beauty and Deceit for the Ives Ensemble at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and for his debut at Carnegie Hall, New York.

Stephen is also a committed concert artist and his diverse repertoire includes Agostino in Hasse’s La Conversione di Sant’Agostino for Il Canto d’Orfeo in Milan (due for CD release in 2011), Purcell Odes with Les Arts Florissants and William Christie, Messiah in Tokyo with Bach Collegium Japan, Messiah and Saul with the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir under Tonu Kaljuste, Theodora in Ferrara, Madrid, London and Paris with Le Concert D’Astree under Emmanuelle Haim and Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater with Yuri Bashmet and the Moscow Soloists.

His discography includes Dido and Aeneas with Rene Jacobs for Harmonia Mundi, Armindo Partenope and Athamas Semele with Christian Curnyn for Chandos, Giles Swayne A Convocation of Worms for Linn Records, Elisa Is The Fayrest Quene also for Chandos, George Lloyd’s Requiem for Albany Records, Cleopatra with Natalie Dessay for EMI Classics and Thomas Arne’s Alfred for the BBC Radio 3 series Brittania at the Opera.

Recently Stephen has sung the title role in Cavalli’s Giasone for the Iford Festival, Gluck’s Orfeo for Korean National Opera, Farnace in Mozart’s Mitridate, Re di Ponto with the Classical Opera Company at Sadler’s Wells, London and the Buxton Festival, The Last Supper with the London Sinfonietta in Milan and Turin, St Matthew Passion in Norway, Athamas Semele with Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques in Paris and London, Ruggiero Alcina for Opera Theatre Company and solo recitals at the Ribchester Festival and the Sviatoslav Richter December Nights Festival in Moscow, Medoro Orlando for Opera National de Lille, Theatre des Champs-Elysees, Paris and Opera de Dijon.

Future plans include Messiah in Salzburg, Carmina Burana at the Royal Albert Hall and Narciso Agrippina at the Teatro del Liceu, Barcelona.

Stephen has been teaching at DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama since September 2010 and was recently appointed as a full-time member of the Vocal Faculty.
