The Schumann Letters tells the story of Clara and Robert Schumann's passionate courtship and their struggle to overcome her father's intense objections to their plans to marry. Between 1836 and 1840, Clara rose to international stardom as a concert pianist while Robert forged his compositions in relative obscurity. Forbidden to see each other by her father's increasingly frenzied disapproval of Robert, the two lovers embarked on a clandestine correspondence, desperately reaching out to each other with music and words to try to ensure their love survived and could be consummated in marriage. Her father, social snobbery, the courts, Clara's constant touring, Robert's fragile mental health, all conspired to destroy their love for each other.

The Schumann Letters brings together actors and musicians from DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama. Actors playing Clara and Robert will read the letters in tandem with musicians performing Clara's and Robert's compositions. In an intimate setting, music and text work in dialogue with each other to capture a crucial period in this extraordinary musical and romantic relationship.
