Making a Show, which runs from Thursday 01 June to Saturday 10 June on the DIT Grangegorman campus, will also showcase the work of the graduating classes of Fine Art, Visual Communications, Visual Merchandising, Interior Design and Product Design.  A  small group of committed furniture designers will also exhibit their work - here are some examples:

Fergus Mc Quillan: Industrial Furniture

The inspiration for this project came directly from the designer’s 20 years experience as an electrician.  The focus of the project was to develop a body of work centred on the combination of industrial  ready-made components complemented by carefully selected natural materials to create a collection of functional, decorative and interactive furniture pieces.

Both the nature and adaptability of the ‘off the shelf’ components allows for almost infinite combinations to be created  supporting  multiple functions such as lighting, storage, electrical connectivity, work surfaces and screens…..

David Murphy: Raised From The Wayside

This project focused on the use of materials deemed surplus to requirement by contemporary society. The designer set about unearthing and highlighting unforeseen values in the source materials to arrive at solutions which allow the unique qualities of each to shine.

Working with two simple ‘waste’ materials, birch timber intended for firewood and scrap copper intended for the export market, through the application of intensive craft processes and in depth design exploration, the designer has unearthed and revealed hidden beauty and value in these materials.

The final range of lighting and occasional furniture both highlights and celebrates these unforeseen values in the source materials and the work is strongly underpinned by a concern for sustainability in manufacturing, a defining issue of our time.
