Social Care

Introduction

Mirroring the primary focus of the BA (Hons.) in Social Care offered by the Department of Social Sciences, a particular research focus is in the area of Social Care and Alternative Care. Research staff in the Department of Social Sciences, affiliated with the CSER, have a particular interest in the clients of social care service providers. For example, their needs, models of best practice and the professional development of the sector. Recent research outputs have focussed on the needs and attitudes of adolescents, with a view to informing youth service provision; attachment theory and well-being for the young person in residential Care; community-based youth counselling; educational needs for young people in emergency accommodation; training and paedagogical issues for social; social policy and old age.

This research makes a considerable contribution to national debate and policy formation and, in addition, is an important contribution to teaching in the Department of Social Sciences.

Social Care provides opportunities for postgraduate studies by research leading to an MPhil or PhD, and welcomes international scholars.
