FAQs

No, DIT is continuing to use Google Apps for its email and calendar services, along with the other Google apps provided (e.g. Drive, Search, Slides, etc). Office 365 Education is being provided by Microsoft to allow students and staff use a fully-functional document editing suite on their own personal devices.

Office 2016 for Mac will only install onto Macs running OS 10.10 or higher. Devices running older versions will only be allowed download Office 2011 for Mac and there is currently an incompatibility between the IT systems in place in DIT and Microsoft to facilitate this. Therefore, the recommended workaround is to upgrade your Mac to OS 10.10 or higher through the App Store.

If you already have what Microsoft call an "installer edition" of Office on your computer, you might not be able to install Office 365. The only workaround currently suggested by Microsoft is to uninstall the existing Office software from your computer and to try the Office 365 installation again. Please ensure you have a backup of your data and have an original copy of your existing Microsoft product before attempting to uninstall it.

Once you are eligible, you can continue to use the plan until you graduate or are no longer a student or staff member at DIT. Eligibility may be re-verified by Microsoft at any time. At expiration, the Office applications enter a reduced-functionality mode, which means documents can be viewed but it isn’t possible to edit or create new documents. In addition, online services such as Office Online and OneDrive will no longer work.

Staff supported by their College IT should contact their local representative.

Notwithstanding the above, DIT has been advised that staff in possession of other DIT-owned devices such as phones and tablets can avail of Office 365 Education by downloading the apps from the relevant App Store.

Organisations are increasingly moving services to the Cloud, including no-fee cloud email services. In cloud computing the overall service to users remains the same, but the service is hosted and the data is stored outside the Institute. These new services brings many advantages for both Staff and Students, including savings in terms of infrastructure and support. Most importantly, making the switch enables us to avail of the latest technology without the high costs of replacing the existing ageing systems.
