Course : Teaching and Learning in an Intercultural context

Duration: 3 Hours

Target Audience: Academic Staff and/or Staff currently engaged in teaching and learning practices.

9.30 am - 9.45 am: Introductions/outline of aims and objectives

 

9.45 am - 10.00 am: Overview of Policy context

 

10.00 am - 11.00 am: Cultural Difference and Cultural Values -  the main areas of cultural difference and cultural values are introduced. The session will provide participants with a language to discuss 'culture' and 'cultural difference' and explain the impact of culture on student/teacher relationships, student motivation/participation and cross-cultural communication.

 

11.00 am - 11.15 am: Coffee Break

 

11.15 am - 11.45 am: Case studies and discussion - Case Studies will be used to uncover and analyse the cultural components of various incidents in which misunderstandings or conflict have occurred. Participants will be divided into groups. Groups will present their findings from the case studies.

 

11.45 am - 12.20 pm: Being an Effective Teacher of International Students - We will look at the topic using literature available on teaching international students and discuss ways to offer better support to international students. We will identify the main barriers in terms of teaching and learning, e.g. academic cultures; academic language; cross-cultural communication, intercultural classroom; approaches to assessment.

 

12.20 pm - 12.30 pm: Summary, Debrief & Evaluation
