DIT Travel Scholarship in Renewable Energy 2017

DIT Travel Scholar in Renewable Energy 2017

DIT student Jack Tanner is the 2017 DIT Travel Scholar in Renewable Energy. In June 2017 Jack begins a three month placement in Kenya working with Renewable World, a charity tackling poverty through Renewable Energy.

Jack is currently in the process of completing his ME in Sustainable Infrastructure at DIT. Throughout his masters Jack has explored areas very relevant to his placement with Renewable World such as climate resilient infrastructure, renewable energy systems and waste and environmental studies.

Jack’s role in Kenya will be to work with Renewable World on the Lake Victoria Energy Hub programme. The programme is installing solar micro-grids in communities along the shores of Lake Victoria. Of these projects, one is seeking to pilot a 6kw energy system to power a fish cold storage and ice making facility for a women’s fishing cooperative. The remaining projects will be installing a 3kw solar PV system supplying between 30 – 55 energy connections within the community. Each of these four sites will also be powering a water pump to irrigate between ½ acre - 2 acres of land.

Jack is the sixth DIT student to receive the DIT Travel Scholarship in Renewable Energy. Since 2013 DIT students have worked on projects with Renewable World in Nepal and Kenya. This opportunity is supported be a generous and committed donor to DIT.

About Renewable World
Renewable World East Africa (RW EA) is a not-for-profit organization seeking to tackle poverty, reduce vulnerability and provide a development pathway not dependent on carbon for the poor and vulnerable. We seek to do this by enabling access to affordable, reliable renewable energy services linked to meaningful, locally relevant income generation activities, as well as enhancement of access to energy for health and education purposes. To do this, Renewable World seeks to leverage skills, knowledge and resources from the global renewable energy sector, its supply chain and its supporters.
