The Irish Academy of Public Relations hosted a special Science Communication evening in the FOCAS Research Institute on Wednesday, 4th March. There is a huge interest today in science matters both nationally and internationally and thus now is a great time for scientists to make their mark in media and become the experts for a new generation. At this event, Prof Hugh Byrne, Head of the FOCAS Institute, chatted about the way that scientists think and the things that journalists just don't understand! Science journalist Sean Dukes came at it from the opposite point of view. He talked about the way that journalists think and the things that scientists just don't understand! The Academy's director, Ellen Gunning was MC for the evening.

Calling all robot enthusiasts! As part of the FOCAS 10th Anniversary celebrations, you are invited to an afternoon of serious fun with embedded systems and robotics on Friday 12th of September.
Would you like to learn a bit about how sensor based embedded systems such as electronic gadgets, medical devices and electronic toys are programmed? If so please sign up for Roboslam, a 3-hour workshop that reveals some of the secrets of embedded systems.
Participants in this workshop work in teams to build a circuit to control a wheeled "robo sumo" robot. Each team will then learn how to programme the "brain" of their robot, the highly popular msp430 microcontroller, to dispose of opposing robots. The workshop ends with a competition that pitches robot against robot on the Roboslam arena.
The workshop will be run by researchers from the FOCAS-based tPOT research group, who develop new applications of embedded systems, as well as academic staff from the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering.
See more at: roboslam.wordpress.com
Places are limited. To book a place, please use the link below. Focas staff and students will be given priority until 18th August so apply soon!
