Commercialisation of IP

Hothouse is committed to the commercialisation of research and the transfer of technology from the Dublin Institute of Technology to the world of industry and commerce. DIT colleagues and students involved in this activity are also entitled to fair financial reward as well as due recognition for their work.

Unlike most other third level Institutes, DIT does not claim ownership of all results of research carried out by DIT staff in the course of their work (see IP policy). Rather, the creator (staff or student) owns all legal rights to the IP except;

  1. Where there are contracts with sponsors that require IP assignment
  2. Where DIT resources were used in the creation of the IP
  3. Where administrative materials were developed for DIT.

The principal vehicles for commercialisation will be through licensing of intellectual property to a third party or through the formation of a campus company or a joint venture. Hothouse will assist in drawing up a beneficial IP package to be agreed with a prospective user or partner or in drafting a business plan towards the formation of a campus or spin-out company or a joint venture. The legal details will be finalised with the Institute's legal advisors. DIT will only embark on a course of patenting and commercialisation if the technology warrants it and if the researchers support the process.

These are the main routes to commercialisation;
