Intellectual Property
‘Intellectual property’ is a legal field that refers to a product of the intellect that has commercial value. Intellectual property rights include patents, know-how, copyrights and trademarks, design or simply ideas. IP rights can be bought and sold like any form of property and can be rented out through the process of licensing.
IP rights are important for two main reasons:
- They can protect your creation from being copied
- They can be valuable intangible assets that can gain financial rewards.
The IP policy at DIT encourages staff, undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers to generate IP. At Hothouse we seek and encourage the commercialisation of IP.
