Capturing IP
DIT encourages colleagues and students to publish their research in peer reviewed journals wherever possible. However colleagues and students should consider the commercial potential of their research results and scholarly works. Where Intellectual Property is thought to exist, colleagues and students should engage with Hothouse, the innovation and Technology Transfer Office in DIT. Hothouse can then advise on protecting the research appropriately before publishing.
When Intellectual Property is thought to have been developed, the principal investigator or research leader should complete a disclosure form and an assignment form (see forms sections) and contact Hothouse.
Hothouse is available to assist in determining the commercial potential and the type of protection needed whether it is secret know-how, patents, registered designs, trade marks or copyright., It can also help commercialise the IP. At DIT each laboratory is required to issue indexed laboratory notebooks which are stored in the research centre or school on completion of the project. Weekly reports citing novel results and progress on the research projects should be issued to the Principal Investigator who should contact Hothouse when intellectual property is thought to have been developed. All visits from external parties should be minuted and reported to the Principal Investigator and all supervision events should be minuted and recorded by supervisors.
