Freedom of Information (FOI) in DIT

The FOI Legislation:

The Freedom of Information (FOI) Act 2014, which was signed into law on 14/10/14, repealed the 1997 and 2003 Acts. Under the Act anyone is entitled to apply for access to information not otherwise publicly available. The FOI Act 2014 provides that every person has the following legal rights:

  1. The right to access official records held by public bodies prescribed under Section 12 of FOI Act (FOI bodies);
  2. The right to have personal information held on them corrected or updated where such information is incomplete, incorrect or misleading under Section 9 of FOI Act; and
  3. The right to be given reasons for decisions taken by FOI bodies that affect them under Section 10 of FOI Act.

These rights are supported by an internal review and an external appeal procedure to the Office of the Information Commissioner.
