Antivirus protection

All computers connected to the Internet are continuously being probed and scanned for vulnerabilities that might allow a virus, malware, or botnet to cause damage or take control. Antivirus and security apps will help keep your computer free of malicious software. You also need to protect yourself against spyware and ransomware, which could gather your personal information and make it inaccessible to you unless a ransom is paid.

While essential, it takes more than antivirus software to safeguard DIT’s computing resources and data. It takes you. Taking steps to secure your computer not only helps keep your data safe, it demonstrates your commitment to protecting the Institute network and all data created, stored, and shared over the network by DIT staff and students. To find out more on how you can help, take a look at our IT Security Tips

Why should I use antivirus software

Protecting your PC from viruses, malware and spyware is of the utmost importance, and all DIT equipment should be protected. Users must ensure that they are running legitimate and up-to-date anti-virus software at all times. If any user suspects viral infection on their machine, a complete virus scan should be performed. If ICT Services detect a machine behaving abnormally due to a possible viral infection, it will be immediately disconnected from the network until deemed safe. Reconnection will usually be after liaison with the owner or local ICT Services agent. In the event of a serious widespread virus attack, emergency procedures, including the disconnection of network segments, will be invoked to ensure the safety of Institute resources.

Getting started

ICT Services provides antivirus and firewall services for all DIT PCs and Apple Macs. Check for the Symantec Endpoint Protection icon in the system tray (on the bottom-right corner of your screen) or search for it in your list of installed apps. If missing, contact the Service Desk on 3123 or to get it installed. Also, don’t forget to protect your home computers as well with a reputable product! Users with Windows-based PCs can avail of Microsoft Defender for free, while Norton Security is a commercial product available for users of Macs and Windows. Many new computers will come with antivirus software pre-installed so check before installing another product as this could affect PC performance. Please note that ICT Services does not endorse any particular product and encourages users to search for products that meet their requirements.
