Has DIT decided to move away from Google Apps?

No, DIT is continuing to use Google Apps for its email and calendar services, along with the other Google apps provided (e.g. Drive, Search, Slides, etc). Office 365 Education is being provided by Microsoft to allow students and staff use a fully-functional document editing suite on their own personal devices.

What are the eligibility requirements for Office 365 Education?

Students must be registered as current students of DIT. Staff must have an “active” status on the DIT HR system. Due to Microsoft licensing rules, we are not permitted to offer these benefits to Alumni or retired staff.

I’ve tried logging in but it won’t accept my password?

Check to make sure you are using the correct password by logging in to your DIT Google Apps account at http://mydit.ie. If that doesn’t work, then you might need to get your password reset. You can do this online at https://mypassword.dit.ie or contact the Support Desk at 01 402 3123.

When I logged in, I got a message "You don't have a license to use Office 365 with the user ID assigned to you by your work or school"

You may have logged into Office 365 through the sign-in option at the top-right of the screen without going through the registration process. Go to http://office.com/GetOffice365 and click on "Find out if you're eligible". Follow the on-screen instructions to log back into Office 365.

I tried to use Office Online but got a message "Sorry, we couldn't create your new document"

This can be resolved by selecting "OneDrive" from the Office 365 home page. This will assign on-line storage to your account where you can save your on-line documents.

I can't install Office 2016 on to my Mac?

Office 2016 for Mac will only install onto Macs running OS 10.10 or higher. Devices running older versions will only be allowed download Office 2011 for Mac and there is currently an incompatibility between the IT systems in place in DIT and Microsoft to facilitate this. Therefore, the recommended workaround is to upgrade your Mac to OS 10.10 or higher through the App Store.

Can I install Office if there is already a version running on my PC or Mac?

If you already have what Microsoft call an "installer edition" of Office on your computer, you might not be able to install Office 365. The only workaround currently suggested by Microsoft is to uninstall the existing Office software from your computer and to try the Office 365 installation again. Please ensure you have a backup of your data and have an original copy of your existing Microsoft product before attempting to uninstall it.

How long can I use Office 365 Education for?

Once you are eligible, you can continue to use the plan until you graduate or are no longer a student or staff member at DIT. Eligibility may be reverified by Microsoft at any time. At expiration, the Office applications enter a reduced-functionality mode, which means documents can be viewed but it isn’t possible to edit or create new documents. In addition, online services such as Office Online and OneDrive will no longer work.

Can I use Office 365 Education on DIT devices?

Office 365 should not be installed on DIT-owned PCs or Macs. DIT has a separate license and support arrangements in place to cover these devices. Therefore, DIT staff wishing to request a copy of Microsoft Office onto DIT-managed PCs and Macs should contact the DIT Support Desk at extension 3123 or email support@dit.ie. Staff supported by their College IT should contact their local representative.

Nothwithstanding the above, DIT has been advised that staff in possession of other DIT-owned devices such as phones and tablets can avail of Office 365 Education by downloading the apps from the relevant App Store.

What level of support can I expect with Office 365 Education?

As a current student or member of staff, ICT Services will take responsibility for ensuring that you can connect to Office 365 Education using your DIT username (student or staff number). At present, ICT Services are not in a position to provide support on the installation and use of any of the services provided under Office 365. We would strongly recommend you ensure your device has the latest updates and is running a current web browser. It is also advisable to make a backup of any valuable data before starting to install Office 2013, as unfortunately, ICT Services cannot take responsibility for any loss of data arising from use of Office 365. However, Microsoft has provided a number of web-based resources which you can avail of.
