Print Journals

Information for library staff

Journal supply

The CSU is responsible for managing the library's journal subscriptions. Our subscriptions are ordered via Swets, an agent who deals directly with publishers. This is the case for the majority of print titles and much of the electronic access.

Print journals are supplied in two ways:

  • Via the consolidation service from Swets, normally twice a week. Swets also claims missing issues.
  • Directly from the publisher by post. The CSU claims missing issues.

Missing issues and claims

If you have not received a particular issue, click on the latest received link in the relevant OPAC record to find status information for the issue. Its status may be one of the following:

  • Arrived.
  • Expected.
  • Claimed (followed by a number to indicate the number of times the resource has been claimed, e.g. "Claimed2").
  • Late (not yet claimed).
  • Late (followed by a number indicating the number of claims, e.g. "Late2").
  • Not published.
  • Out of print (no longer available).
  • Unavailable (claimed but never received).

First-time claims are made at least once a month. Lists of pending claims are sent to the relevant library sites to ensure they are correct. We appreciate your help with these as they eliminate unnecessary claims.

Second and subsequent claims are also made every month.

Occasionally, late issues can be overlooked so if you notice very late issues or several missing issues, please contact Mary using the contact information below.

Information for students and academic staff

Journals

Journals provide the most up-to-date information available in the library. These range from academic publications to magazines and daily newspapers. This type of periodic information is available in a variety of formats including print journals, online resources and subscription databases.

Searching for journals on the main catalogue

Choose the journal title search. Enter the journal title and click submit. Select the journal name from the list of titles.

Clicking the digital media link will allow you to access resources electronically.

Alternatively, selecting the journal title link will bring up a more detailed record (publisher, location, frequency, subject and holdings). Hyperlinks to electronic resources are also included here. Print journal records contain a latest received link to details of current receipts and outstanding orders (see above).
