Inter-Library Loans

Inter-Library Loans is a lending service between libraries. DIT staff and students can request the loan of books, journal articles or theses from other academic libraries in Ireland, the UK and abroad.

Kevin St Library application forms can be downloaded as follows:

Is there a cost?

The charge is €6 for Undergraduate students or €8 for Staff and Postgraduate students.

DIT staff members from Faculties and Research Units can purchase books of 10 vouchers for €80 by filling in a voucher purchase form available from any DIT library. The request form must quote a DIT budget number and be signed by the budget holder.

What should I do first?

Before applying for an inter-library loan please check the DIT Library Catalogue to see if the item you require is available in DIT in either print or electronic form. See the following DIT Kevin St Library Guide Finding fulltext journal articles if you need more help with this.

You may visit another library in Dublin if they have material that you require. You will need a Letter of Introduction from DIT library or postgraduates and staff can apply for an ALCID card which allows free access to academic libraries in Dublin.

How does the service work?

You can request an inter-library loan as follows:

  • At your home library fill out a request form at the library desk. See Kevin St Library application forms above. Please include as much detail as possible about the item and also include your contact details.
  • Payment should be made by cash or a voucher to library staff.
  • The library will email you the electronic reprint or notify you when books or theses are ready to be collected. On collection you may need to sign a copyright declaration form. Books and theses will be checked out to you for a period of time usually specified by the lending library. Some books may be available for library use only. If the item you requested is a photocopy you may keep it.
  • Please make sure to return items by the date requested as items then have to be sent back to the lending library.
