Oxford Reference Online contains Encyclopedias, Dictionaries, Quotations, Illustrations, Timelines, and so on for a wide variety of subjects. The subject “Performing Arts” contains many reference books for the study of music and drama. These include The Oxford Companion to Shakespeare, A Dictionary of Opera Characters and the Grove Book of Operas.

The catalogue of the International Inventory of Musical Sources (RISM) contains around 700,000 entries (mostly historical music manuscripts).The original sources are stored in the libraries, music archives, and private collections as indicated in the RISM database.
