Developing an activities programme for older people in day and residential settings

Course Description

The course is a level 7 Continuing Professional Development programme (CPD) that runs over 5 full days.  The course runs once every year, on 5 consecutive Fridays.  Dates for 2019 are May 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st, and is subject to demand.

The fee in 2016 was €285. 

The course is designed for people who are working with or have an interest in working with older people either as employees or volunteers. The course would be of particular interest to nursing, care and other staff involved in activities programmes in long-term, day care and community settings. The content of the course reflects the HIQA social model of care for older people and may be of interest to social care workers in the elder care or disability sectors.

This course introduces participants to practical and creative approaches designed to improve quality of life for older people in care and community settings. The course develops practical and theoretical understanding of psychological and social transitions associated with ageing. It involves reflection on practice from a social care value base.

Using experiential and creative learning methods participants develop approaches to designing and implementing activity programmes in their work settings. The emphasis throughout the course is on developing positive communication skills, facilitating developmental activities and fostering meaningful participation with and for older people.

The content includes psychological and social transitions, professional practice, communication skills, art, music and drama, spirituality, organising activities, dementia care and care for older people with intellectual disabilities, intergenerational learning, older people and community.
