The 2011- 14 DIT Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy was approved by Academic Council in 2011. The vision for the new strategy is underpinned by 6 strategic priorities, namely the Curriculum, Teaching Excellence, Development of Key Skills & Competences, Diversity of Learning Opportunities, External & Internal Engagement and Evaluation & Review.
Rather than being a static document, the strategy continues to evolve in line with our institutional and College priorities. By way of supporting these changes, the review group, led by John O’Connor, Head of Art, Design and Printing and with support from the LTTC, have organised a series of forums when you will have an opportunity to contribute to and engage with the strategy development as the 3 year indicators of progress are revisited and re-prioritised. During these sessions you will also be able to discuss a range of Learning, Teaching and Assessment issues of importance to you as Academics, Teachers and Programme Chairs.
The vision for the strategy is ‘to improve continuously the learning experience so that all (DIT) students acquire an agreed set of core skills and develop as independent learners’. This third forum has a particular focus on the development of these core skills or set of ‘Graduate attributes’. Are there key attributes that we feel should characterise or distinguish our DIT graduates? What are these? How might we better support the development and assessment of these skills through eg the design of programmes, learning, teaching and assessment strategies etc?
The session was introduced and chaired by John O’Connor, Head of the School of Art, Design and Printing. Noel O’Connor, Director of Student services gave a short presentation Graduate attributes: strategic planning for future success. This was followed by small group discussion and activities.
TLA Strategy Forum in action: Focussing on the development of Graduate Attributes
This forum reviewed the 2011- 14 DIT Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy in Action with a particular focus on the first year curriculum. The first year curriculum, in particular, remains a priority for the DIT as we aim to provide all our new students with a successful transition into, and engagement with, DIT by providing them with the appropriate opportunities and support within their first year. A range of short inputs from academic staff involved in teaching first year students opened the session. This was followed by a small group discussion.
A keynote presentation : ‘Developing Critical Thinking Skills: A Review’ from Dr Gerry MacRuairc, UCD, launched the event. This was followed by small group discussion that focussed on the development of the 3 year indicators of the DIT strategic priorities in action.
