The programme consists of three integrated projects namely;

  • Optometric education/School of Optometry
  • Collaborative Research
  • Vision Care Service delivery

Other cross cutting components of the programme are;

  • Cross Institutional Network Development
  • Specialist Knowledge Development
  • Public Dissemination

The Goal of the Programme

To reduce incidences of avoidable blindness and visual impairment in Mozambique caused by refractive errors by the year 2020

Outputs from the Programme

By the end of the programme in 2014, the following will have been achieved;

1. There will be greater access to training for eye health professionals

2. There will be affordable and accessible eye care within the public health system.

3. Spectacles and other optical devices will be readily available to those who need

4. There will be 44 qualified eye care human resources in the country

5. A network for information dissemination and knowledge base on refractive errors will have been established

6. A strong balanced collaboration between North and South institutions will exist

7. Recognition and registration of optometry as profession in the country
