DMC scoops "02 National Digital Media Award"

Shakira Nelis, of DIT's Digital Media Centre, was awarded the Digital Storytelling Award for her CD-Rom "Sviatlana" at the prestigious "02 National Digital Media Awards" held recently.

The primary objective of the "02 National Digital Media Awards" is to showcase the greatest achievements in the emerging digital media industry in Ireland and create a platform for companies to show their achievements on a national stage and in a global environment and identify the innovators in the industry.

Sviatlana is a documentary CD-ROM produced by three students - Shakira Nelis, Melanie McDonagh and Rory Coveney - whilst completing their MA in Interactive Media at DIT, Aungier Street.

The piece tells the effects of the 1986 Chernobyl Disaster through the eyes of Sviatlana, a courageous woman from Chechersk in Belarus. The CD combines video, narrative, photography and audio to tell the original, emotional story as captured by the group on their trip to Belarus.

The CD has won five interaction awards and two interface design awards over the past year. The project was also selected by Chernobyl Children's Project for inclusion in the 'Blackwind, Whiteland' exhibition held at the United Nations Headquarters, New York April 2001.

For more information on the making of the CD-ROM see www.sviatlana.com .
