DIT Careers Service wins AGCAS Innovation Award for New Career Planning Workshop
DIT Careers Service was presented with the AGCAS (Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services) Excellence Award for innovation in careers education at the recent AGCAS biennial conference held at the University of Warwick, UK. The award recognises outstanding achievements in the field of professional Higher Education careers work throughout the UK and Ireland.
The Excellence Awards are designed to encourage, reward and share good practice amongst Higher Education careers practitioners by promoting high quality, creative, innovative and collaborative projects and high professional standards across the full range of careers work.
This year’s themes were Expansion, Excellence and Enterprise. Careers advisers and higher education professionals from universities across the globe met to debate the current hot topics in graduate careers. The themes of the conference were the expansion of higher education and the graduate labour market, a focus on excellence, the development of student enterprise and entrepreneurship, and work-life balance.
DIT Careers Service secured the innovation award for the development of a new one day career planning workshop. The workshop goes through the step by step process of planning a holiday and compares this to the systematic approach needed to plan a career. DIT Careers Service has made tangible a process that may have otherwise seemed complicated. The core aspects of the workshop include:
- Knowing Yourself
- Occupational Research
- Career Decision Making
- Job Search & Applications
- Career Evaluation and Review
The workshop encourages individual and group participation, utilises discussion, presentation and interactive exercises in a supportive environment. Currently delivered to 40% of final year cohorts, it is hoped that the workshop will be delivered to 80% of final years in 2005/2006.
