West Cork Arts Centre recognises that the BA in Visual Art Programme is a significant arts and cultural resource for the West Cork region bringing professional artists to the area and creating opportunities for students, other artists, communities and arts organisations alike.
This is the first time third level education has been offered on an Irish offshore island. It marks a huge step forward in educational policy for small, isolated communities. Such innovation in third level educational delivery is vital to the future survival and viability of small communities. This is a proud and exciting event for all concerned - Sherkin Island as a community, SIDS, DIT, WCAC – students and staff of the Programme, directly and indirectly, many people have contributed to bringing this Programme to its present landmark stage in outreach education. It is a well deserved occasion for a good celebration.
Thanks are extended to the Department of Rural, Gaeltacht and Community Affairs for their continued funding support for this Programme.
