DIT crowned All Ireland Freshers Football Champions 2010

8th April 2010
DIT etched their name on the Higher Education Freshers Trophy for 2010 after overcoming Cork IT on a score line of 2-14 to 2-8 last Thursday. First half goals from DIT’s Andrew Tormey and Ciaran Martin were the catalyst for victory as DIT captured their second HE Freshers Football Championship title in three years with the six point win in the Garda Training College Grounds, Templemore.
The team's path to the final has not been an easy one but impressively they have cleared every hurdle that has been put in front of them like a champion horse at Cheltenham. After impressively overcoming defending champions DCU in the first round of the championship in Grangegorman, DIT immediately became one of the favorites to recapture the crown they last held in 2008. Next time out Sligo IT put up a feeble challenge and was destroyed at the quarter-final stage in a one-sided affair but much tougher was to come for the group of first year students. DIT were pushed all the way by a very determined Queen's side in the semi-final and if they cleared the previous two hurdles comfortably, this one was crossed wearily with a heavy stumble. DIT took a six-point advantage midway through the second half but the northern outfit refused to roll over and die and against all-odds forced the tie into extra time. However, DIT dug deep to carve a hard earned-victory and secure their place in the championship decider on a score-line of 2-14 to 3-09.
In the lead up to the final, team captain Aidan O'Shea (Mayo), admitted he was really looking forward to the match after weeks of preparation and waiting. "Yeah, I can't wait for the final, fresher is a once off and to have a chance to win it is great," he said. College football though is not all about winning and the O’Shea said that joining the GAA club is a superb way to settle into the college social scene. "Well I think playing football is the perfect way to interact and get to know people in the same college with the same interests," he stated.
