DIT and Innovation Dublin 2010

Innovation Dublin 2010 takes place between 10 – 21 November. The festival aims to provide Dubliners - whether they’re entrepreneurs, students, researchers, artists or large corporations – with an opportunity to discuss, promote and celebrate innovation in the city. DIT, along with companies and organisations across Dublin, will host a number of events during the ten-day festival, including public lectures, exhibitions and demonstrations.

Here is a brief outline of DIT events as part of Innovation Dublin:
- Wednesday 10 November: Understanding satellite transmission of radio broadcast
The RTE Mobile Radio Unit will be at the Kevin Street campus of DIT from 3pm and visitors are welcome to board the unit and to see how the technologies work. At 6 pm, Sean Walsh, engineer in charge of the unit, will give a talk and demonstration of the technologies. - Wednesday 10 – Saturday 20 November: Students Learning with Communities Showcase - exhibition
This exhibition will take place in Bolton Street, Mountjoy Square, Kevin Street, Aungier Street and Cathal Brugha Street and will showcase the work of over 1000 students who took part in projects with community partners. - Wednesday 10 – Saturday 20 November: Design at DIT - exhibition
An exhibition in Mountjoy Square campus showing outstanding examples of work by young designers who are current students or recent DIT graduates - Wednesday 10 November, 11 am - Colour Holography for Museums - Bringing the Artefacts Back to the People
Colour holography for the 'Bringing the Artefacts back to the people' project in Wales will be presented. For this project, jolograms of ten different museum artefacts were recorded using the single-beam Denisyuk colour reflection hologram technique at the Centre for Modern Optics’ hologram laboratory. RGB lasers and panchromatic ultra-fine-grain silver-halide materials were used for the recording. - Wednesday 17 November, 1 pm: Adding Value to Waste – live interview
In the Be Inspired. Be an Entrepreneur series of live interviews with entrepreneurs, DIT Hothouse presents Rita Shah, joint managing director and co-founder of Shabra Plastics and Packaging in a lunchtime event in Kevin Street at 1 pm - Wednesday 17 November: Apps for fun and profit: the story of Tunepal – talk
Bryan Duggan, lecturer in the School of Computing and inventor of Tunepal, talks about apps, how to develop them and how to make money from them – Kevin Street campus at 7 pm - Thursday 18 November: Workshops and Masterclass in Technology Transfer: the CREST experience
The Centre for Research in Engineering Surface Technology (CREST) invites you to a laboratory experience during its open-day workshop in the Focas Institute, Camden Row. You can participate in a hands-on experience of the day-to-day activities of a busy academic and commercial laboratory and attend a Master Class on “Technology development and Transfer: the CREST model”. For more details click here. - Thursday 18 November: Iron Age on the M3 – new findings in the Tara Skryne Valley
Frank Prendergast, School of Spatial Planning in DIT and PhD student in the School of Archaeology, UCD, will present fascinating new findings on the Iron Age ‘post enclosure’ at Lismullin, Co. Meath - the methods used to construct and align the enclosure, and its likely ceremonial function – 6.30 pm, Bolton Street campus. - Friday 19th November: Getting Ahead of the Curve: fostering innovation through futures thinking – one day conference
This conference brings to Dublin leading international futurists and the most innovative and future-focused organisations to showcase how futures thinking can assist in the discovery of new possibilities and alternative business approaches – Wood Quay Venue, Dublin City Council Civic Offices, 9 am to 5 pm - Friday 19th November: Low carbon vehicles: engineering the challenge – lecture
John R. Wood, President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers will give a lecture on the subject of ‘low carbon vehicles’. Over the next few decades there will be rapid progress as novel solutions and new technologies are developed to meet the challenges of climate change and fossil fuel shortages – 6.30 pm, Bolton Street campus. - Friday 19 November: DIT leads by Invention – announcement of DIT Inventor 2010
Each year the DIT Inventor Competition encourages innovation and creativity by recognising students, researchers and colleagues as inventors. Many clever inventions have come through the competition over the years, including technology that takes turbulence out of flying, animation software, hologram technology for mass production, audio thumbnail technology for music lovers, and a phlebotomy aid for the extraction of blood samples. Winners of the 2010 Inventor Competition will be announced on Friday 19 November at 11 am in The Courtyard, DIT, Aungier Street - Saturday 20 November: Ernest Adams Game Design Workshop
