Volkswagen backs DIT student drive for success
3rd July, 2012: Volkswagen Group Ireland today announced their sponsorship of Formula DIT, a team of final year Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering students from DIT, who will shortly enter the annual four day international ‘Formula Student’ competition at Silverstone.
The competition, which is the biggest educational motorsport event in Europe, challenges students to design and build a single seat racing car and use it to compete in a series of static and dynamic events. The technology and performance of the cars is tested and the teams are asked to present a viable business proposal.
Formula DIT will compete against over one hundred and fifty universities from all over the World.
This is the second year that the DIT has competed in class 1 in the competition. Commenting on the sponsorship, Bill Reddington, School of Manufacturing and Design DIT, said: “Volkswagens support will help the team to put their best foot forward when competing in Formula Student at Silverstone. Our students will compete against a field of teams from colleges around the world, most of whom have more than 10 years of competitive experience at this level but our team is confident that they will perform well and we know that they will do us proud.”
Simon Elliott, Group CEO of Volkswagen Group Ireland said, “Volkswagen is delighted to support Formula DIT. It’s been a pleasure to work with the team and it’s clear that this is a very talented group of engineers. It’s important that we support the innovators of the future so that they can develop the skills required to grow Ireland’s reputation in this industry.”
Formula Student takes place over four days at Silverstone from July 11th – July 15th 2012 and is run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Backed by industry, the competition aims to inspire and develop enterprising and innovative young engineers.
