The integration of photovoltaics into building facades and roofs is the most rapidly growing application of solar energy to buildings internationally. Most systems are grid-linked and have led to the conception of electricity grids as harvesters of energy from multiplicity of embedded generators as opposed to transmission and distribution from a few large power stations. This presentation will discuss the attributes of building integrated photovoltaic in both commercial and domestic buildings together with issues and trends in the economic viability of different applications contexts.

The characteristics of particular installations will be discussed and an insight provided into current research aimed at improving system performance whilst incurring no additional initial capital costs.

Brian Norton has over 20 years experience in solar energy applications and is responsible for the realisation of major building integrated photovoltaics projects as well as underlying research.
