Joint IEE/CIBSE Presentation
The Dublin Port Tunnel is the largest project for a single piece of infrastructure ever undertaken in Ireland. Design and construction of the tunnel has been in progress since early 2001 and substantial parts of the main civil works are now complete. As work on construction of the carriageways within the tunnel commences and installation of the mechanical and electrical systems is being planned, it is appropriate to consider the features included in the tunnel that contribute to the overall safety of tunnel users when the tunnel is operational.
This presentation will provide a brief overview of the Dublin Port Tunnel and the main civil construction works. It will then introduce the standards and guidelines that exist for the provision of safety features in a tunnel of this type. The major part of the paper will comprise an explanation of the wide range of mechanical and electrical systems provided within the tunnel, highlighting their particular contribution to safety of tunnel users.
The Speaker, Chris Staddon is a Principal Engineer with Hyder Consulting (UK) Ltd, one of the sub-consultants in a team led by Brown & Root, the Construction Supervisor appointed by Dublin City Council to advise and assist it in connection with the design and construct contract for the Dublin Port Tunnel. He has been the Senior Resident Engineer (M&E) within the Construction Supervisor's organisation since Brown & Root were appointed in January 2001.
In this role, he has had lead responsibility for reviewing M&E designs to ensure compliance with the Employer's Requirements and conformance with current international practice. Chris will continue his involvement through the installation and testing phase, including overseeing a three month period of integrated system tests before the tunnel can be opened for public use.
